The HB 2023 conference, held from 11th to 14th June in Aachen, Germany, brought together leading experts in sustainable solutions for a healthy indoor environment. Notably, Giovanna Gargiulo, in collaboration with the University of Rome Tor Vergata and the National Institute of Health in Rome, presented her groundbreaking academic work on ‘A Digital Twin of an Operating Theater.’ Gargiulo emphasized the significance of utilizing a Digital Twin to prevent infections, optimize airflow, and ensure a comfortable environment for medical staff and patients. Highlighting its advantages over Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), she showcased a compelling case study conducted at the S. Gerardo Hospital in Monza, Italy. The study included CFD simulations, comparing results with the Digital Twin and showcasing its real-time responsiveness and accuracy. Future endeavors involve expanding the scope to complete an entire operating theater, allowing for easy geometry modifications and conducting experiments on a mock-up.
